How to Mitigate Liquor Liability Risks for the Holidays How to Mitigate Liquor Liability Risks for the Holidays

Drunk-driving crashes take many lives per year. Oftentimes, the victims and families will take legal action against bars and restaurants for serving the customer who is responsible for the alcohol-related incident. For your client to be best protected from liquor liability risks from occurring is to educate your clients about how they can train their employees to prevent serving minors and deny service to patrons who have had too much to drink.

Here are some tips for your client's bar so they can educate their employees and protect their business from potential liquor liability incidents:

Recognizing Intoxication

Your client must teach their employees about the signs of intoxication, which can include:

  • Slurred or changes in speech
  • Confusion
  • Stumbling or unable to walk
  • Bloodshot eyes

Your client's employees must be able to observe when a guest has had too much to drink. The SMART (Server & Managers Alcohol Responsibility Training) program is a great tool for your client to teach their employees how to monitor the amount a guest is drinking.

Right to Refuse Service

The employees at your client's business must know when to deny service to a guest. The best way to make sure all employees know how to handle denying service, your client should create a policy for the employees to follow.

Taking Action

If an incident occurs, your client needs to have an incident report available for employees to complete. Employees should be specific when describing the incident. They should be instructed to include names, a testimony, any disturbances because of the guest, and any fake ID use.

Another important way for your client to take action to lessen risks is to remind the employees of the consequences of serving minors or continuing to serve someone who is overly intoxicated. Also, remind your clients that employees must know that they are liable for over-serving a guest and could face consequences.

Protecting Your Client's Business

At the end of the day, your client can only do so much in terms of education to help prevent risks. The best way for them to be protected is to have a  Sports Bar Insurance Program. By obtaining insurance, your client will be better protected against liquor liability.
